Key facts
You'll need to use Clarinaze  nasal spray regularly for it to work, and it may take a few days or up to several weeks to work fully. If you're using it for nasal polyps, it may take up to 2 months to get better.
If you're using it for hay fever, start a couple of weeks before the hay fever season begins.
The most common side effects are an unpleasant smell, a dry or sore nose or throat, and nose bleeds.
You may get a blue steroid treatment card if your doctor has prescribed a very high dose of mometasone nasal spray to control your symptoms. Show this card to your doctor or dentist before any treatment, so they know you're using it. You may also need to carry a red steroid emergency card (for adults) or an adrenal insufficiency card (for children). Ask your pharmacist or doctor.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Clarinaze can cause side effects but many people have no side effects or only minor ones.

With Clarinaze nasal spray, if you're not using high doses for a long time, very little medicine is absorbed into the rest of your body, so it's not likely to give you serious side effects.

Common side effects

These common side effects of Clarinaze nasal spray may happen in more than 1 in 100 people. There are things you can do to help cope with them:

  • Headaches
  • Unpleasant taste or smell
  • Sneezing
  • Nosebleeds, dry or sore nose or throat

Speak to your doctor or a pharmacist if this advice does not help and the side effects still bother you or do not go away.

Serious side effects

Very few people have serious side effects when using Clarinaze nasal spray.

You're more likely to have a serious side effect if you use high doses of mometasone for more than a few months.

Call a doctor or call 111 straight away if you get:

eye problems such as pain or blurred vision – these can be signs of increased pressure in your eyes (glaucoma) or a cataract

problems such as nose pain, sores inside your nose or nosebleeds that do not stop

Serious allergic reaction

In rare cases, Clarinaze may cause a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).
